meaningful work during my gap year- Ellie's Spotlight

If you are looking to start a gap year with Habitat Iowa's AmeriCorps program, check out our open positions at www.iowahabitat.org/apply-americorps.

What inspired you to serve?

I was inspired to serve as an AmeriCorps member after I graduated college because I was looking for a way to broaden my experiences. I had heard about the program from an AmeriCorps alumni and I knew that serving with Habitat for Humanity would allow me to do meaningful work during my gap year.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I always make sure that I am helping out wherever I am needed. This could mean running errands, organizing data, helping with events, working with social media to highlight some volunteer programs, or spending a day on a construction site. Most days I am working on a special project or meeting with organizations and members of the community. Recently, I have been spending time creating a book of homeowner stories for our affiliate.

What did you enjoy most about serving?

My coworkers are so amazing. I love coming to work every morning because the environment is so fun and welcoming. Being surrounded by such kind and dedicated people only inspires me to work harder.

What do you love most about Habitat for Humanity?

I love that Habitat for Humanity has the ability to create a community that is centered on affordable housing. Volunteers continue to come back to work with each family and create bonds of support. Each family, donor, and volunteer that we work with strengthens our affiliate.

What is one thing you learned in the last month?

Last month I had the opportunity to attend the Habitat Midwest Convention. I was able to learn from other affiliates about projects they are working on and listen to speakers from around the country.
