Growing as a person and doing something good-Maya's Spotlight

Katie Sylvis

Today we are introducing our #AmeriCorps member, Maya Long. Maya is serving for the year on our Mobile Response Team (MRT) headquartered at Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity. Maya is joining us from the Maryland/D.C. area and has been a great addition to the team.

Future plans for Maya's including pursuing public service through politics so she came to Volunteer Iowa's AmeriCorps Day at the Capital. There she was able to learn more about local legislative work here in Iowa.

Learn more about Maya’s experience in her own words:

What inspired you to serve?

Wanting to see and help a community different from the one I grew up in. Growing as a person and doing something good.

[Additionally, I joined] the Habitat for Humanity of Iowa AmeriCorps program because I am deeply committed to making a tangible difference in communities through service. I admire Habitat for Humanity’s mission of providing safe, affordable housing, and I believe that housing is a fundamental need that can transform lives. Through this program, I hope to develop hands-on skills, engage with diverse communities, and contribute meaningfully to projects that improve people’s quality of life. Additionally, I’m eager to grow personally and professionally, learning from the experience of service while working alongside passionate individuals dedicated to making a real impact

What do you enjoy most about serving?

I enjoy the camaraderie and learning about different skills that can help me in the future with construction.
