Kayla Wells is currently serving as a construction associate with the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity this summer. This position is currently helping her fulfill some summer internship requirements through Iowa State University.

We asked Kayla what inspired her to serve a summer of AmeriCorps service. She said

“As an interior design student, I really wanted to gain more knowledge about how houses are built and the construction process. I also think it's great what Habitat is doing by helping families obtain affordable homes.”

What is a typical day like for you? Everyday is a bit different, but I'll work with my construction manager, Bella, on whatever houses she has in the works. So far it has been putting the finishing touches on a rehab house, as well as a new home for the Women's Build. I also helped out with a Panel Build, which was lots of fun.

What do you like most about serving with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity? It's a very encouraging and welcoming environment. I learn something new everyday and feel comfortable asking questions.

Kayla is making the most of her summer by serving and learning in the greater Des Moines community. If you also want to learn skills, earn morning, and serve your community check out www.iowahabitat.org/apply-americorps to open positions for this summer and fall.
