Continues as a Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps member so she could enhance her skill set.
"I learned that you have to pivot your problem-solving approach if or when it stops being effective."
Norah Schlax is serving a second term as an AmeriCorps member at Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity. She first served with Green Iowa at a Habitat for Humanity site and loved the work she was doing and the impact she made on the community. When her term ended, she decided to continue as a Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps member so she could enhance her skill set. She assists with volunteer outreach and some marketing and event planning. She checks her email and responds to potential volunteers. She prepares emails to go to clubs and organizations at local universities. She calls local businesses and organizations that have been recognized as volunteering and if they agree to volunteer, she works with her supervisor to schedule them on site. She meets the volunteers on site and a few days a month she will grab lunch and take it to groups of volunteers that serve weekly. She posts on social media and creates flyers for homeowner dedications or writes press releases.
Norah likes getting out in the community and interacting with new faces every day! She loves that Habitat staff and volunteers share their love for building people up and providing stability in the lives of the partner families. One Interesting thing Norah said was "I learned that you have to pivot your problem-solving approach if or when it stops being effective."
